Scott replaced Goddard and with Damon in the lead role, production on the film proceeded. Goddard adapted the book into a screenplay and was initially assigned to direct, but the film was discontinued. Producer Simon Kinberg took over production on the film after 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to the book in March 2013. The film's cast also includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebestian Stan, Aksel Hennie and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film is about his struggle to survive and everyone's efforts to save him.
